Tribulations

The mage’s portal room was a circular domed cavern carved from granite rock. The only conventional means in and out was via a pair of large, heavy metal doors — presently wide open to allow the passage of the exiting warriors. The Knight Guard had been retrieved from another realm and, in an instant, miraculously delivered to this mysterious place. Alexander stood with his father on the podium in the centre of the room. He’d never been in this place before and found it unsettling.

A low hum pulsated through his being. The room’s primary light source came from the far wall. Out of a wall of some strange fluidic body, a soft blue translucent glow emitted. Like stones dropping into a pond, a series of concentric ripples radiated on its surface. Each discharge accompanied a low pulse before sending new ripples of expanding rings. These, in turn, bounced into others to create a mosaic dance. Within its depths, the light refracted, giving Alexander a sense of vital potential. It seemed to him as if a sleeping monster lurked, one that could erupt back into life at any moment.

While his mother and a company of Moontars had retrieved them, Alexander realised his father, the great mage, had worked this majik. “Father, I can’t tell you how close we came to being overrun. I’m so thankful,” he said as the last Knight Guard left the room.

“Son,” Adakar started with a kind smile. “You can thank your mother for drawing me away from my work, and yes, we saw what a close thing it was.”

Adakar lifted his arms. The fluidic wall quickly dissolved into a vivid image of a wilderness landscape. An aerial view provided a perfect vantage point to survey the surrounding countryside, whence Alexander had recently departed. In the distance, the pair observed Den Moor and his men searching the battle scene.

“Ha! They’re as confused as I am,” Alexander announced, chuckling to himself. “So, you were following us,” he commented, still puzzled by what he observed.

Adakar lowered his arms to return the pond wall to its static state, displaying refractive depths and surface ripples. “We checked on your progress, yes,” Adakar admitted.

Noticing Alexander marvelling at the implications, Adakar offered his son some cautionary advice. “There are limitations. I cannot always protect you. Let’s say, this time, the planets were aligned. This will not always be the case. I trust you’ve learnt a valuable lesson from this escapade?” he finished in an authoritative tone.

“More than I expected to,” he agreed. “It is truly amazing!”

“Good,” Adakar said with a smile, placing a hand on his son’s shoulder. “Remember Alexander; although I may not be the most attentive father, you are my son and special to me, and the Moontar world for that matter,” he added with a whimsical smile.

Looking to the exit, Adakar added, “Now, let’s join your troops and celebrate your Knight Guard’s first victory.”
